Transfer Information

Students planning to transfer should consider completing the LC Core Curriculum or an Associate of Arts/Science Degree. Both programs will prepare students for transfer to a university.

Students should be mindful that each college or university determines its own list of courses required for a particular kind of degree which may vary from requirements set by other institutions. It is strongly recommended that students obtain a catalog from the college or university to which they intend to transfer to. The catalog will list the courses required for the degree sought.

Academic and faculty advisors at Laredo College are equipped to assist students in choosing courses that are both transferable and applicable to the program being sought. Students are also encouraged to use the on-line resources available on the Student Success Center transfer webpage http://www.laredo.edu/cms/transfer/.

As with any degree, students should avoid taking courses that are not required by their program of study. Doing so will lead to the accumulation of credits that may be applicable toward degrees and may compromise future financial aid.

According to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), “Requirements completed at one college or university must be accepted and substituted for those of the institution receiving the transfer student, even if the sending institution’s Core Curriculum is not an exact match for that of the receiving institution.” Therefore, it is strongly encouraged that students complete the Core Curriculum at the sending institution so that it may be transferred as a block of credit. By transferring the completed Core Curriculum to the receiving institution, the student may not be required to take additional core curriculum courses towards Core completion. However, this is only if the receiving institution does not have a larger Core Curriculum approved by THECB. Students who transfer to their receiving institution without Core completion at their sending institution will receive credit for the Core courses taken at the sending institution; however, they may be required to take additional courses to for Core Curriculum completion. Please note that this stipulation is applicable to public institutions. Private institutions may exercise a distinct discretion that is not governed by the THECB.

Reverse Transfer

Students attending a four-year institution may transfer credits back to Laredo College so that they are able to complete an associate’s degree, particularly the Associate of Arts and Associate of Science Degrees. The completion of an associate degree is important for it provides a marketable credential for jobs while pursuing a bachelor’s degree, evidence of completing fundamental concepts and knowledge of an area, and an achievement of an educational goal.

Course Plan or Objective

Students must complete a program degree guide in consultation with their advisor prior to initial registration and must update the guide each semester. Each student admitted to Laredo College should decide on a course of study or degree plan and work toward that objective.

Career assessment is available to students who have not selected a college major at the Student Success Center.

Academic requirements are not the same for all course plans, so it is important for students to get academic/career advisement and plan accordingly. Upon declaration of a major, students should contact the department of their major to receive academic advising.
