Upward Bound Program

The Upward Bound Program at Laredo College is a college preparatory program designed to develop the academic and social skills of low-income and/or first generation students. It is funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of TRiO Programs. The program’s objectives are to improve students’ high school grade point averages, increase standardized test scores, assist with financial aid and scholarship forms, and provide assistance in applying for college admission. Students who participate in the Upward Bound Program must make a commitment to attend classes during the academic year and summer components.

The fall and spring component consist of students attending class on Saturdays. Instruction is offered in core subjects, which include reading, English, math, science, and foreign language. In addition, tutoring is available Monday through Thursday in the core subjects and advanced classes (Algebra I and II, Geometry and Pre-Calculus). Speakers from the community are also invited to address students on career opportunities so students are able to explore a variety of career choices.

The summer component is a six-week program, beginning in June and ending in July. The schedule consists of academic courses along with electives, such as creative writing, classic short stories, poetry, persuasive speaking and introductory course in computer aided design (CAD). Mandatory classes are scheduled from Monday through Thursday. All classes are held at the Fort McIntosh Campus where students interact in a college environment.

Throughout the academic year and the summer component, students are given the opportunity to participate in various cultural and social events including, but not limited to, visits to colleges/universities, historical sites, and museums to enhance instruction and develop social skills.
