Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 protects the privacy of educational records, establishes the right of a student to inspect and review their educational record, and provides guidelines for the correction of inaccurate or misleading data. Laredo College complies with the provisions of this Act and informs students of their rights by publishing the general policy in the college catalog and specific policy and procedure in the Student Handbook. Copies are available in the Office of the Registrar and Admissions or the office of the associate dean of students.
Students have the right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failure by the College to comply with the Act.
Student information may be provided to parents/legal guardians without written consent by the student if the student is a financial dependent of his/her parents or legal guardian as defined under section 152 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954.
The Office of the Registrar and Admissions maintains a Directory of Records which lists all educational records kept on students by this institution. All the rights and protections given students under FERPA belong to the student.
