Upward Bound Program
The Upward Bound Program at Laredo College is a college preparatory program designed to develop the academic and social skills of low-income and/or first generation students. It is funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of TRiO Programs.
The fall and spring component consist of students attending class on Saturdays. Instruction is offered in core subjects, which include reading, English, math, science, and foreign language. In addition, tutoring is available Monday through Thursday in the core subjects and advanced classes (Algebra I and II, Geometry and Pre-Calculus). Tutoring in fall/spring is offered Monday thru Thursday and for the summer component on Fridays.
The summer component is a six-week program, beginning in June and ending in July. The schedule consists of academic courses along with electives, such as creative writing, classic short stories, poetry, persuasive speaking and introductory course in computer aided design (CAD).
Throughout the academic year and the summer component, students are given the opportunity to participate in various cultural and social events including, but not limited to, visits to colleges/universities, historical sites, and museums to enhance instruction and develop social skills.
The Summer Bridge program is offered to those UB students who have graduated from high school. Upward Bound will pay for two courses for college credit that may be transferred to the college of their choice.
Upward Bound provides stipends for all UB students who participate on a full-time basis. For the academic year, stipend does not exceed $40 per month and in the summer does not exceed $120. Bridge students are paid $300 per month during the summer school recess. All classes are held at the Fort McIntosh Campus.
