CHEM - Chemistry
The Natural Sciences Department offers lecture and laboratory courses. The diverse courses in the disciplines of biology, chemistry, geology, and physics target both non-major and major tracks.
Students that are not majoring in the sciences are expected to meet 6 hours of science lecture courses for their LC core requirements. It is strongly advised for the students to verify the requirements set by the receiving institution they plan to attend. Although 6 hours equate to two lecture courses, it is recommended that non-majors take the laboratories that are required for their receiving institution. Many receiving institutions expect non-majors to take two science lectures and two science laboratories. Students that are majoring in the sciences are also expected to meet 6 hours of science lecture courses for their LC core requirements; however, as science majors the laboratory is expected to be taken concurrently with the lecture.
Please note that lecture courses are part of LC institutional core requirements while labs will be counted as elective hours. On the same note, it is crucial that the student inform the advisors of the receiving institution they plan to attend. It is for this reason that science lectures and laboratories are recommended to be taken during the same semester.
If a student enrolls for both the lecture and lab and is not being successful in one, then the student is able to drop the course they are being unsuccessful in and remain in the passing course. In a subsequent semester, the student can enroll for only the lecture or lab they were unsuccessful in, however they may not register for the succeeding course.
For example, if a student passes only CHEM 1111 (lab) and not CHEM 1311 (lecture) , then they can remain in CHEM 1111 (lab) within the semester and in a subsequent semester take CHEM 1311 (lecture). The student has to pass both CHEM 1311 (lecture) and CHEM 1111 (lab) in order to register for CHEM 1312 (lecture) and CHEM 1112 (lab). Science lectures (3 hours) when dropped will receive a ‘W’ but the science laboratory (1 hr) will not count against the 6 drop limit. All courses required as a prerequisite for a higher level course, must be passed with a grade of "C" or better.
