MUAP - Applied Music Lessons

The applied music curriculum is designed to foster maximum development of skill and insight in musical performance. Students are given an opportunity to gain experience in performing before an audience through participation in recital programs. All majors applying for credit in applied music appear before an examining committee at the close of each semester. The examining committee evaluates standing, credit, and grade in applied music. Applied music courses may not be audited.

In addition to regular tuition and fees, a student enrolled in applied music courses is charged a fee as follows:

  • $20 per course offering one semester credit with one half-hour individual lesson per week.
  • $40 per course offering two semester credits with two half-hour individual lessons per week.

Private instruction in applied music is offered in strings, brass, percussion, woodwinds, keyboard and voice. Courses may be repeated for credit on the recommendation of the appropriate applied music jury.

The one semester credit applied music courses are open to any college student. These courses are designed for (1) students majoring in a discipline other than music; (2) music majors whose proficiency in their principal instrument or voice is not adequate to begin study in the two semester credit courses; and (3) music majors who wish to study a secondary instrument or voice. Students will receive one half-hour private lesson per week and are required to practice a minimum of six hours a week.

The two semester credit applied music courses involve two half-hour private lessons and a minimum of 10 practice hours per week. These courses are designed for (1) students working toward the BM degree with a major in Music Education; (2) students working toward the BA degree with a major or minor in music; and (3) non-majors who demonstrate adequate proficiency.

There are no performance requirements in the one semester credit courses. Students in the two semester credit courses will be required to gain experience in performing before an audience through participation in recital programs. Minimum performance requirements, both instrumental and vocal, are established by the faculty.

All music majors taking applied music courses must appear for a jury examination and in a public recital in order to receive credit. Jury examination will be conducted by the faculty of each applied music area at the end of each semester. Specific examination requirements are subject to periodic review.

See tables for a listing of all 100-level (one-hour credit) and 200-level (two-hour credit) applied music courses.
